Blog Assignment 7: EDITORIAL

This particular editorial may not be appealing to all readers, but others may experience this issue in another way. The issue I have is with the University of Southern Mississippi’s eagle club. I am aware that this is my university, but I do have an issue. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, I am a cheerleader at USM. The issue I have is that the eagle club receives millions of dollars a year for student athlete scholarships. I am aware that not everyone believes cheerleading is a sport, but we do cheer for football, volleyball, and basketball. We also attend baseball games to work concessions and this doesn’t include every football and school event that we are required to attend. The cheerleaders receive between 200-500 dollars a semester as scholarship. I feel it isn’t greedy to want more scholarship, provided all that we are required to do, plus our own practice time. The 200-500 dollars that we receive will not even cover book fees. The eagle club comes in to play when they are already receiving these millions of dollars a year to provide to the other 360 student athletes. I know somewhere in the million dollar earning they could give the cheerleading program more scholarship. Not only could they give more to cheerleaders, but also the band, Dixie darlings, and southern miss dancers. My parent’s are a member of the eagle club since they buy season football tickets. They are basically donating for the other student athletes to go to college instead of their own daughter. I completely agree that other student athletes should receive scholarship, and I’m glad that my family can help; I just feel that cheerleaders should receive the same. My family received a letter in the mail asking them to give more to help all of the student athletes because they need to reach up to four million dollars to pay for scholarships. I know that this letter was sent to every eagle club member as well.  I can’t really understand how four million dollars a year for 360 athletes add up and how they could possibly need more money. I feel it is unfair that band member families, cheerleading families, and others are donating to the eagle club, but their actual family isn’t even receiving the scholarship. I just do not understand where the school justifies giving the cheerleaders such a low amount of money for all that they are asked to do and contribute, especially since the eagle club receives millions of dollars a year.

Blog Assignment 5: Beginning the Job Search

I have found three job openings and one internship from the two sites listed above. These three jobs would be what I would call starter jobs, but they are all potentially something that could lead to a higher position and great opportunity.

The job titles for the first link above are a student marketing assistant and an IMG college internship.
The job titles for the second link are a seasonal athlete at Nike and the other an associate category merchant.

The requirements listed for the first job opening is highly motivated, driven, and bright students. Other requirements state that you must be enrolled and have at least one semester remaining at USM. The student marketing assistants are expected to attend all home sports that are assigned to you for that semester and you must choose other sports to contribute to as well. You must be available on nights and weekends to help with events. Lastly you must stay committed to academic obligations while contributing and gaining experience in collegiate athletics.

The next possible job would be an internship at Southern Mississippi. The job requirements are somewhat similar to the first job openings. They are looking for a highly motivated individual to do the internship. They must be highly organized with the ability to multi-task and work under pressure. All candidates applying for the job must possess strong written, communication, and computer skills. They must also be familiar with the Microsoft Office programs. They must also be very personable, proactive, and willing to work long hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The candidate should ideally be a college junior or senior with a career path preferably in Sport Marketing/Sport Business. You must also be able to work with others, as you might possibly be assigned corporate partners.  You must be able to organize and manage sponsorship contracts. Must preform game day duties for football, basketball, and baseball including coordination of hospitality efforts, tracking sponsored in-game features, signage placement, and activation of on-field or in-stadium promotions.

The first job opening for Nike is a seasonal athlete, which is someone who would be working in a local Nike store. You must be a natural leader and a motivator and always up for a challenge. The qualifications listed are that you must have or be pursuing a High School diploma or GED. Must be able to preform basic math functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You must also be able to effectively communicate in verbal and written English. Physical requirements include the ability to twist, bend, squat, climb a ladder and stand for extended periods of time. Must also be able to accomplish multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and also be able to work well with others as a team.

The last job I found was also at Nike. The next job would actually take place in Oregon. As the Associate Category Merchant for Women’s Training, you will provide Merchandising support and execution within Regional Product Merchandising at an intermediate professional level. You will be responsible for providing SKU targets based on historical numbers and overall SKU targets. You will be preparing Merchandising Tools such as style/SKU reports, productivity reports, flow, and assortment pages, merchandising grids, etc. You will translate and prioritize consumer insights and opportunities from countries/region to provide critical and valuable input to the Global Category Product teams. You will update the line plan for the category and assist in briefing product needs and concepts into the Global Category Product teams. You will drive the translation of consumer insights into regionally relevant stories, collections and concepts to drive the business. The qualifications listed are a bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field with a minimum two years experience in Product Management, Product Planning/Operations or Retail Buying; an additional two years experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelors degree. Must be able to translate observations of trends, color, materials and fashion into compelling product recommendations, then editing the product line for profitability. Must have general financial proficiency and analysis skills. Must be able to enter data in a variety of systems and databases. Also must have verbal and written communication skills in local market language, including presentations.

Some of the skills I posses are written and verbal communication skills. I also am very organized and motivated. Since I am a cheerleader I have experience working with a team. I have worked in an office before and performed secretary like task. I am able to work on all Microsoft programs. I have also worked at a gymnastics business and taught many students gymnastics and also coached cheerleading teams. I will make sure to list all of these qualifications in my resume and cover letter showing the people in charge of hiring that I have the qualifications needed for the job.

The job that seems to be most fit for me is the internship at Southern Miss. I would love this internship because it is asking for people who are in Sport Marketing/Sport Business. My major is Sport Management and this would be a perfect fit for me. They are looking for someone highly motivated and highly organized. These are two qualifications that I have. They must also have skill in writing and communication and be familiar with Microsoft Office.  They must also be able to work well with others. This internship seems to be a perfect fit for me. As I listed above I have worked on teams, coached, and in an office. I am familiar with all of the skills needed. In my resume I would simply list all of the qualifications and hopefully that would put me as a possible candidate for the internship.

***CORRECT BLOG 4*****

To: T. Leoni, Manager, Personnel Department
From: Donald Pryzblo, Manager, Data Processing Department
Subject: INCORRECT PAYROLL CHECKS

Dear Mr. Leoni,

I strongly recommend that you tell your clerks to review their work carefully before giving it to the computer operators.

I have been reviewing the “errors” in the computer files. Contrary to what was insinuated in our meeting, your clerks made majority of the mistakes in the payroll checks.

·      I feel that it is unfair for my workers to take the blame for this.
·      My workers are correctly copying the faulty time tickets that your clerks are preparing.
·      My workers do not have the extra time to correct the errors made by your workers.
·      I will not hire additional help for correcting errors.

You and I discussed requiring my computer operators to perform the very time-consuming task of comparing their entries against the time sheets from which your clerks are miscopying.

I just want to make sure we have a clear understanding of this situation. I hope that you do follow my recommendations and advise your clerks to carefully review their work before giving it to computer operators.

Thank you

Donald Pryzblo, Manager
Data Processing Department

There are many different ways you can go about revising this email depending on how you want to come across to the reader. I understand that the reader is already aware of the problem going on, which caused the writer to come off with a more harsh and to the point approach, but I feel to get better results you should let them know you are not happy but also stay professional. The first change I made in this email was to create spacing in the email. The email was all together and hard to read. I went through and created spaces between short paragraphs. Also I went back and started the email with the recommendations. The email started off completely on the wrong foot and if I were to have received the email I would have been infuriated. It seems like the message is better communicated by starting with recommendations. I am aware that the personnel department was aware of their errors, but scalding someone through email will probably not help the problem either. I feel that in the original email there was not any sentence structure. It seemed like the writer was just saying the first thing that came to mind. When revising I made it easier for the reader to understand the point in a more grammatical way. I also added bullets to the email to make the points more clear. The writer also referred to their employees as “my people”, I feel that is not a way to refer to professionals. I went back and revised it to say workers instead. I also went back and added a closing sentence. The original email was not formal at all. Since this email is being sent back and forth between two professional people, I thought it should be more formal. Also, since the writer is saying things that could possibly offend the reader, it makes it easier for the reader to understand what the writer is asking him to do. I also closed the email with a thank you and a signature.

Blog Assignment 4: Defining Your Brochure's Objectives

Since blog three asked us to look at several departmental web pages from universities across the country that are being used to recruit students in my particular major, I decided to use the same two websites again as my demonstration for an effective site and one that was less so. These two websites will help me when having to create my brochure by showing me what information should or should not be added.

Effective Website: Minnesota State University, Mankato
This website did an amazing job in trying to recruit potential students to Sport Management majors and to this school in particular. It was hard for me to find any weaknesses when reading the website. The website did an amazing job in reaching its target readers. College students can be through a range of ages and they did an amazing job reaching each of them. For teenagers and young adults the website showed pictures and student athletes excelling in their major. Also more pictures of students all together doing fun things within their major. It was very appealing. It looked more like a fraternity than a major. For the older students it showed many scholarships, internships, and organizational groups they could get involved in. However, all of these things are appealing to any age college student. They were very persuasive in showing you how wonderful it would be to join the Sport Management major at the university. The site gave many details about sport management in general and also the requirements needed to graduate from this program. The website told you everything that you could possibly need to know about Sport Management.

This website lacked strengths. It was not engaging, nor did it grab my attention. It held little information about Sport Management and it did not have anything that made it seem like it was an amazing major to choose. The only thing the site listed was the major requirements and the staff teaching the courses. It did not give anything about scholarships, organizational groups, or internships. It looked like the university was not even proud of the major.

When creating my brochure I would want it to contain all kinds of information, something like the first website I have shown in this blog. I would want it to be effective enough to recruit many students in my major at USM.

Overall Purpose
My overall purpose would be to reach students and hopefully get them to join my major in Sport Management. I would be writing about the program and the many things that could be achieved in this major. The outcome I would desire would be to gain new students in sport management and the outcome for the reader would be the same. They would be searching for a major and hopefully they would find it from looking at the brochure.
Reader Profile
The primary readers would be prospective college students. Their relationship to me if they were reading my particular brochure that I will be creating would be student to student. Others who might be reading my brochure would be teachers or other Sport Management majors. The primary reader would probably have little knowledge about my subject at the time. The only thing they might know is that they are interested in Sport and from there it would be my job to inform them everything about the major. I would assume that the reader did not have any communication preferences other than the brochure having a clear point and giving every bit of information about the major as possible.
Situational Analysis
There are really no particular events or circumstances that would influence the way I will be writing. However, I will be professional in my writing and well educated in what I am saying.
Usability Objectives
The reader will be asking what is Sport Management about? What kind of job can I get after graduating? What scholarships are available? Are internships available? Are there student organizations I can join? All of these questions will be answered on the brochure.
The reader can use sequential reading from beginning to end. They would read through the whole brochure and find what they need. The reader can also use selective reading, as when using a reference book. There will be highlighted words throughout the reading such as scholarships, internships, and sport management information. The reader can use the information I provide by attempting to determine how the information I provide will affect him or her. Hopefully the information will affect them in a way that they will be able to choose Sport Management as their major.
Persuasive Objectives
The reader’s attitude towards the subject is probably pretty positive. They want to learn more about sport management.
Stakeholders would probably be no one.
Constraints
There are no expectations, regulations, or other factors that could limit the way I write.

When creating my brochure I will make sure to include a lot of information just like the effective website did.
